Erie Zoo's Capital Campaign Nears $10 Million Goal Thanks to Community Support

In 2019, the Erie Zoo launched a capital campaign to raise $10 million for their Wide Open Spaces project, which included plans for a new giraffe exhibit and other enhancements. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and loss of accreditation in 2021, priorities shifted.

Now, the focus is on fundraising for a new veterinary facility, with plans to open a new otter exhibit and improve existing habitats with the campaign's funds. As of late 2023, the campaign had raised about $7 million, thanks to the generosity of the community.

Recent donations have helped boost the total to $8.9 million, close to 90% of their original goal. These contributions have facilitated projects like converting locomotives to electric power and updating various zoo facilities.

CEO Melissa "Roo" Kojancie considers the campaign a success and emphasizes that fundraising efforts are ongoing. The support of the community has been crucial, and they hope to continue garnering support for their conservation efforts.
